Have you ever wondered just how your own laptop works on a physical level? It’s like being 7 years old and wondering how babies are made – apparently, it “just happens.”
As an undeclared engineer at college, I was once in that situation. No, not the “7 years old” part. Nor the “wondering how babies are made” part. I was itching to figure out what professional field I wanted to get into, and computer hardware seemed intriguing. I had no prior exposure in the field and I needed a taste of what computer engineering entailed; however, no matter how long I searched for, I could not find a simple, concisely written work that explained the underlying concepts of the very tool that I used for hours everyday. All I could find were resources that sounded unnecessarily complicated and pompous. I was not exactly a technology pioneer with 30 years of experience back then, so it was somewhat like being blindfolded and told to decipher obscure code.
I have condensed my vastly accumulated knowledge in computer engineering into a layman-friendly explanation. You could do a few simple exercises here and there to commit new information and concepts to memory, but the important part is that you will be able to get at least a conceptual understanding of the topics presented simply by reading while lying down on a couch.
I invite you to fully question just how on earth computers do the fascinating things that they do. The future of humanity will increasingly revolve around computing technology, and it would be thoroughly fulfilling for me if I could play at least a small role in helping people understand the deepest roots of our greatest innovation.
