Tired of living under the shadow of her mother's bad choices, Autumn Maddox left home the first chance she got. But when her carefully constructed life crumbles around her, Autumn's forced to return to the small southern town that never let her forget she came from the wrong side of the tracks.

Jude Southerland, the town doctor, is used to taking care of people and with a pedigree that has the Ladies Auxiliary reaching for their fans, he's easily the town's most eligible bachelor - a status he has no intention of changing. That is until he almost runs down the Maddox girl he never noticed in school and suddenly finds her lush curves, dark curls and blue eyes consuming his thoughts, day and night.

Autumn would like nothing more than to live happily ever after with Jude. But with every local matron in the valley trying to marry him off to their own daughters, she knows they won't let her forget that she's not good enough and never will be. With the chance to finally find happiness, can she overcome her family history and find the confidence she needs to believe in herself or will she let love pass her by?

Feels Like Home The Southerlands Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Evelyn Adams Reid Kerr Books

Grammar and writing style were decent. They may have been two beautiful people, but the chemistry was lacking for me. The romance in general seemed rushed. When it reached a point that the characters should be invested in each other and the relationship I still felt like they were in lust... Also, the intimate scenes I had to double check I was on the right page because I literally thought I had accidentally skipped back to the first time - they were that similar. That aside I genuinely liked the characters, I liked the way their dialogue flowed, and I liked the fact the main female lead saved herself and that the author didn't rely on the typical male lead hero complex. However, was that really the most original weapon of choice? For real? So, yeah, a few things I wasn't crazy about, but a few things that worked for me and all in all the good outweigh the bad by a slim margin.

I only give 3+ stars to books I'll read again and/or will continue the series. (P.s. Kudos to this author for finishing this story and using sub characters introduced in this book to continue the series - so there's no cliffhangers, but we can come back and visit old friend in the new stories - that's a win:win in my book). The next book is not the top of my wish list, but it is on it and I might purchase it on the next rainy day!

Feels Like Home The Southerlands Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Evelyn Adams Reid Kerr Books Reviews

Editing could have been a bit more diligent, but overall the writing was nice. Max and Abby were a pleasant touch. There were a few things about the book that nagged at me though.

The Southerland's and the Maddox's grew up in the same small town. Everyone knows everyone in a town that size (especially with the Smith/Maddox kids reputations), yet they had no clue as to who each other were. Now maybe, if they just hadn't recognized each other (there is an age difference after all, and Autumn had been gone for years) I wouldn't have given it a thought.

Then there's Summer. Her character seemed to be written as intelligent and caring, but I just couldn't bring myself to believe that she would willingly put her daughter in such a dangerous situation. If she was abused or threatened in some way I could understand and even sympathize with her. Then there was "the locked room", She had absolutely no clue what was happening behind that locked door. There was so more that could have been done with that character and her situation.

Having said that, I did like the story line. I jut think there could have been a little more thought put into some of it. The second book in the series sounds promising though and I will probably give it a try when my reading list thins a bit.
Feels Like Home was a great opposites attract kind of story. A woman from a broken family with a reputation around town that is less than stellar and a well off doctor from the town's founding family finding love.

A romance between main characters Jude and Autumn was a wonderful way to establish this series. After the death of her grandmother brings her back to her hometown and an ensuing scandal at work leaves her with nowhere to go she decides to put down roots, taking care of her sister and niece in the house her grandmother left her. Of course working for Jude temporarily isn't in the plan but working in such close quarters only benefits Jude in his quest to court her. This was a feel good story, full of love and romance and hope. There was no game playing, no lies, manipulation or underhanded deceit to win affection. It was just two strong people finding love and trying to make it work. Jude was a great guy who knew what he wanted, recognized Autumn's fears and did whatever it took to assure her everything would be OK. Autumn had some issues of worthlessness due to her mother's past sins but her determination to be better set her apart from the flighty heroine's that are such a turn off for me. These two had their act together separately and the fun was in watching them get it together, together! It's not any easy road for them by any means, outside forces play into trying to keep them apart. Especially people closest to Jude with their opinions.

Everything flowed so nicely in this story. The secondary characters were an interesting mix of personalities, the pacing of the story was steady and never dragged and the writing was a mix of both character's perspectives that is always a bonus. I love getting both sides of the story. I'm a first timer when it comes to Adam's writing but with such a great leading story I find myself excited to see what's to come from the rest of the Southerland novels. If you're tired of the game playing and cheating in most books now, then give Evelyn a chance to woo you to the sweeter side of romance. Where grown ups ACT like grownups and a simple conversation can save you so much drama.
I stumbled upon this series by clicking this as a free book. I can tell you that I will be purchasing the other books as well. This book gripped me and didn't let go. Jude is a doctor who comes from a stable, loving family. Autumn has come home for her grandmother's funeral. Her family is a mixed bag. Her mother was a common topic of the town biddies. Her brothers and sisters, mostly from different dads, are good for nothings. She has one sister and a niece who you will fall in love with. Autumn doesn't think that she is good enough for Jude. He tries with all of his might to make her see that she is indeed good enough. There are a lot of emotions in this book. There is an air of that southern charm in the town (with the exception of the women who down their noses at people). Dual point of view. No cliffhanger.
